The Traditional Fisherman’s Forum

Brought to you by fanatics What you’re about to see is an accident. One day Joe volunteered to lead a fly tying demo at a local club meeting. It seemed like a good idea, at the time, to put the effort on-line for all to see. From these serendipitous beginnings comes a multi-year task that’s been a delight to produce. Each month, more or less, we’ll bring you a fly pattern selected to be effective for the angling you’ll encounter both on our Midwestern warm waters and around the country. From trout flies to tarpon flies, this is an exploration. Come along for the ride and we’ll show you interesting, new and classic patterns. Some of them might not even be flies!

Questions about Antique Reels: Brands and Companies Q1: Many of the questions received about older reels concern American level winding baitcasting reels mass-produced from the s to the s. The vast majority of the mass-produced baitcasting reels and fly reels, too, for that matter made by the major tackle companies from the s to the s can still be found easily at flea markets and yard sales. Therefore, only a small fraction of these reels have significant collector value.

Highlander split cane, Hardy Perfect and a silk line. But not only does Niels fish full dressed flies, he also fishes them on a Phoenix silk line wound on a Hardy Perfect reel, which again is mounted on a 13′ Highlander split cane rod made by J.H. MC GINN in Scotland.

Martin Joergensen Highlander split cane, Hardy Perfect He uses this rod for his home rivers, the Danish Karup and Skjern, hunting for salmon and sea trout. When going to Norway’s larger rivers he “cheats” and uses a 14′ Hexagraph rod, which is a carbon fiber rod, but has the action and look of split cane. With these combos he raids the Danish and Norwegian salmon rivers and as you can well imagine, attracts quite some attention when he reveals his gear and opens his flyboxes full of classical full dressed flies.

The line was a special order from Phoenix in France. I can’t imagine they get many orders for weight silk lines these days, and according to Niels the delivery also took many weeks because they had to make it for him. There are probably few two hand silk lines in stock anywhere. The line is beautiful and casts like a dream says Niels who has fished it a few times already. He tells me that the casting pace and rhythm of his setup has to be deliberately slow, but that both reach and presentation is on par with anything he has tried.

The reel is a newly made Hardy Perfect four-and-three-quarter inches – no. Not as expensive as it sounds, but not a cheap reel either. And so noisy that if you hook a salmon in the Norwegian river Surna it can be heard all the way to Oslo.

Doak Miramichi Hand Tied Tapered Leaders We began making these for our own use a few years ago after being disappointed with the various manufactured leaders of the day. When customers asked what leader we used, the next question would often be why don’t you have them for sale, so we had to start offering them. Along the way, we developed a unique method of tapering and trimming the blood-knots to make them less obtrusive, which is a frequent complaint with knotted leaders.

No chemicals, heat, lubricants or saliva are used in welding the knots, but we think you’ll be pleased with the results, no matter how we do it. Every leader is tied by Jerry Doak and every section is carefully measured and inspected to ensure the highest quality and consistency. For darker rivers like the Miramichi, we use Maxima Chameleon which many salmon fishermen prefer for its abrasion resistance, excellent knot strength and just the right amount of stiffness to ensure a powerful turn over and great fly presentation.

For rivers with clear water, we also offer a more translucent option made with Maxima Ultragreen material.

Fly fishing[ edit ] Trading card of the Ustonson company, an early firm specializing in fishing rods, and holder of a Royal Warrant from the s The art of fly fishing took a great leap forward after the English Civil War , where a newly found interest in the activity left its mark on the many books and treatises that were written on the subject at the time. The renowned officer in the Parliamentary army , Robert Venables , published in The Experienced Angler, or Angling improved, being a general discourse of angling, imparting many of the aptest ways and choicest experiments for the taking of most sorts of fish in pond or river.

It was a celebration of the art and spirit of fishing in prose and verse; six verses were quoted from John Dennys ‘s earlier work. A second part to the book was added by Walton’s friend Charles Cotton. Running rings began to appear along the fishing rods, which gave anglers greater control over the cast line. The rods themselves were also becoming increasingly sophisticated and specialized for different roles. Jointed rods became common from the middle of the century and bamboo came to be used for the top section of the rod, giving it a much greater strength and flexibility.

The industry also became commercialized — rods and tackle were sold at the haberdashers store. After the Great Fire of London in , artisans moved to Redditch which became a centre of production of fishing related products from the s.
