Track Light Installation Video Smack dab in the center of many ceilings hangs a rather prosaic light fixture. Typically, this fixture wishy-washes a room with an overall glow. It makes the room usable but adds very little character, contrast, or lighting interest. Incandescent lampholders could be substituted for low-voltage.

For either, you can get a broad range of lampholder styles and bulbs at lighting retailers.

The SoCo system of Sockets & Cords delivers choice, flexibility and the power of custom design. The SoCo sockets accommodates any volt, medium base lamp up to watts (not included).

Install the right lighting and they’ll love it after dark, too. By Cliff Popejoy Low-voltage lighting isn’t just post caps. A wide variety of fixtures provide general, decorative, accent, and safety lighting. A great deck deserves great lighting, not just a couple of wall-mounted watt floodlights that glare down on the deck — which is almost worse than no light at all. There are two different types of deck lighting systems: One operates on household voltage volts, also called “line voltage” , and the other runs on low voltage 12 volts.

Each has pros and cons, but except for very large residential projects, low-voltage systems are usually a better choice. Low-voltage systems are inherently safer. Because there’s virtually no electrocution hazard, codes don’t require exposed low-voltage cable to be run in conduit, and in most jurisdictions, no electrician’s license is required to install low-voltage wiring if you need to run an additional line-voltage circuit to feed the transformer, call an electrician. Additionally, there are a wide variety of low-voltage outdoor fixtures available.

Low-voltage systems do have a few downsides, though. The fixtures put out less light than line-voltage fixtures, and if the distance from the transformer to the farthest fixture is feet or more, voltage drop can cause a dim, yellow light unless you use special installation techniques.

Introduction Buy Lighting Kit Low-voltage lighting kits are available at many home centers. They typically include a variety of lights, ‘ of low-voltage cable and a transformer, which converts household current into low-voltage current. Strip the ends of the low-voltage power cable, and connect them to the terminals on the transformer. Step 1 Check the Electrical Connections After you set up the transformer, plan the layout.

Depending on the style of the light, you can assemble it and press it into the ground or drive the base into the ground and screw the light onto the base. Some lights have adjustable shades that help you direct the light onto specific areas.

The VAC inputs can simply be a two-screw connection for most low voltage transformers. Before any termination to a transformer, follow the nameplate schematic for all terminations. Connect the transformer for a or VAC primary input. Interconnect terminals H2 and H3 with either the vendor provided metal jumper, or make a small wire jumper by stripping a short piece of wire with the wire strippers.

Attach the jumper, using the screwdriver, and tighten the screw terminals to secure the wire jumper in place. Attach the input or high voltage wires to H1 and H2. The low voltage terminals will be identified by X1, X2, X3 and X4. The interconnection of the low voltage side, or secondary terminals, depends on the high side, or primary voltage.

Disconnecting the Wiring Turn off the power source at the breaker. Find the junction box. On older pools, this will be in the deck directly above the light niche, often under a 4-inch diameter stainless steel or bronze cover plate that is held in place by three screws that probably have rusted or stripped heads, making them impossible to remove.

Later building codes required the junction box to be at least 5 feet from the edge of the water and 18 inches above the surface of the water, so on more recently constructed pools, look in the garden directly behind the light niche and you will often find it sticking up there.

Actually I said mV power voltage. This makes it clear I am talking about a voltage, so “power” in this case is used to describe which voltage. How would you have said it? I suppose “power supply voltage” would be more complete, but was what I said really ambiguous?

Oct 08,  · First off, let me explain that “High Power LEDs” should probably read “High Intensity LEDs”. By my calculations this whole setup uses about 23w of electricity.

Transformer must be mounted in a vertical position. Bottom of the transformer must be at least 12″ from the ground. Transformer may become hot; do not mount on vinyl. On the secondary side low voltage taps of the transformer, each circuit has its own magnetic circuit breaker toggle switch that is connected to a Common Tap marked with a label, “COM”. These Common Taps can accommodate up to W 25A. The exception to that is when the transformer capacity is less than W; in that case, the capacity will be equal to the transformer capacity.

Generally, it is a good practice to connect each of your home run lines directly to the transformer, spreading them evenly among the available commons. Ideally, if two or more home run wires share a voltage tap, then connect them to the same common. Connecting lighting runs to the transformer: The home run cable e. One wire gets connected to the Common Terminal labeled “COM” , the other wire connects to a Voltage Terminal the colored labels that say 12, 13, 14, etc.

The correct Voltage Terminal is the one that results in an optimal voltage at the fixtures connected to that run. This is a Multi-Tap transformer, which means you can output at a variety of voltages to compensate for Voltage Drop see our learning area for more information on layouts and voltage drop.

By Brent on September 22, in Articles Whenever a current is flowing, the current will meet some resistance or something will impede its flow, the amount of voltage loss through the entirety of a circuit, or even a part is voltage drop. In low voltage lighting systems such as flexible LED strip lights, voltage drops occur because the input voltage from the power supply gradually decreases over the length of the strip. The longer the flexible led strip light tape, the more resistance the current has to overcome, hence it loses voltage along the way.

The result is dimming lights the further down the LED strip you get because the light emitting diodes SMD chips at the end of the strip are less bright than those at the start, which is closest to the power supply.

Festoon Lights are popular both indoors and out, with big bulbs and bags of character. Available in a huge range of colours and styles, festoon lighting is a popular choice for weddings and events, as well as gardens in need of light and character or a bold interior design lighting choice.

Low voltage systems are perfect for creative highlighting of trees, gardens, artwork and other landscape features. Low voltage fixtures are easy to install. Low voltage cable can be buried in a shallow trench, run through conduit or buried underground. A low voltage system is flexible. You can easily move fixtures to accomodate plant growth or to change lighting effects. Low voltage systems are safe and energy efficient.

Transformers reduce standard voltage from volts to a safe 12 volts. There is no risk of electrical shock to children or animals if the cable is accidentally cut. Lamps use less wattage and may not have the brightness of volt, higher wattage lamps.

Low Voltage Check out the following lighting facts to understand the differences between line-voltage and low-voltage fixtures and bulbs. For this, line-voltage fixtures are basically plug-and-play. Low-voltage lighting typically uses 12 or 24 volts and requires a transformer to lower the line voltage from volts to avoid immediately burning out the low-voltage bulb. The transformer for low-voltage lighting is either built into the fixture or located remotely.

The wattage rating of a transformer should be the same or higher than the combined wattage of the lighting system.

This wire seems to be just what I wanted. If you are going to do landscape lighting in a large yard you need heavy gage wire and 10 gage fills the bill.

Instead of disturbing your permanent soldered splices, you can use your test wire at the splice to temporarily hook up a fixture with wire nuts. This is also an affective way to add a temporary light on your company’s sign when completing a lighting job. House Numbers are Focal Points Make sure to treat the house number as a visual destination in your lighting design. You may need to dedicate a fixture to lighting the number.

You may also need to increase the lamp wattage to ensure that the number stands out compared to nearby lit areas and objects. By doing this, you are helping visitors, police and ambulance drivers to quickly identify the house. Contractors in the southern states know well the problem with fire ants.
